Cognitive scientists call them "desirable difficulties," in which learning that feels harder in the moment — solving before being shown, generating answers rather than recognizing them, working slightly above comfort level — produces knowledge that lasts and transfers.

Ascend, our accelerated curriculum, is desirable difficulty by design. It's built on the reasoning system behind the SHSAT — one of the most rigorous exams given to middle schoolers in the country — and it trains students to read problems structurally, eliminate with discipline, and reason under time pressure. Students don't memorize this year's answers. They build the skills that produce answers, this year and every year after. As students transition into high school, they carry these foundational skills forward and apply them to increasingly advanced coursework and SAT preparation.

A meta-analysis spanning more than a century of memory research reached a clear conclusion: the same hours of study produce substantially more lasting learning when spread out than when done together. Distributed practice is one of only two techniques rated as highest utility across all of learning science — the other is practice testing — and ARC is built on both.

That's why every ARC student attends exactly two fixed evenings a week, with material deliberately resurfacing across sessions. Not five days of drop-in. Not a weekend cram before the test. Two spaced, structured sessions — the rhythm the evidence supports.

Exercise isn't separate from learning—it supports it. Research links aerobic exercise to improvements in attention, executive function, and academic performance, while traditional martial arts training has been shown to strengthen self-regulation and executive function in children.

That is why ARC combines academics and Taekwondo under one roof. The focus, impulse control, and composure students develop on the mat are the same skills they rely on in the classroom. Mind and motion aren't separate—they develop together.

One of the most replicated findings in cognitive science is the testing effect: retrieving knowledge under exam conditions produces far more durable learning than re-reading notes or watching explanations. In a landmark review of ten study techniques, practice testing ranked at the very top — and re-reading and highlighting, the two things students do most, ranked near the bottom.

ARC is built around retrieval. Classes run on questions students must answer before methods are explained, and Saturday mornings offer full-length proctored practice tests with score analysis afterward — real conditions, real timing, real data on what to fix next.

In the 1970s, a six-year Québec study found that students who spent an extra hour each day in physical education maintained—and sometimes exceeded—the academic performance of students with more classroom time. California’s SPARK study later found the same: more movement, no academic cost.

Research suggests that how Taekwondo is taught matters as much as what is taught. In a frequently cited study, students taught traditional Taekwondo—including poomsae, etiquette, philosophy, and respect for rank—showed reduced aggression and anxiety and improved self-esteem, while students taught only physical techniques showed opposite trends. Broader research similarly links traditional martial arts training to stronger self-control and reduced aggression.

That is what the Taekwondo ARC teaches. Kukkiwon-certified instruction preserves the full tradition—bowing, Korean terminology, poomsae, discipline, and earned rank—because these elements are central to developing character, not just technique.

The worry every parent has: won't an evening taekwondo class take away from schoolwork? The U.S. Centers for Disease Control reviewed fifty studies on school-based physical activity and academic performance and found the opposite of a trade-off — time spent in physical activity did not detract from academic achievement, and in most cases the associations ran positive: better grades, better concentration, better classroom behavior.

At ARC, Taekwondo isn't competing with the academic block. It follows it. The time spent in the dojang is the evidence that the report card doesn't miss, and often thanks you for.

In 1984, educational psychologist Benjamin Bloom documented what he called the "2 Sigma Problem": students taught one-on-one dramatically outperformed students in conventional classrooms. Four decades of research since then have consistently pointed in the same direction: the smaller and more responsive the instruction, the more students learn.

That's why ARC classes are capped at a small size, taught live by the instructor who designed the curriculum — and why private one-on-one sessions are available for students who need the full Bloom effect.
